Approximately fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.

Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.

A senior official said the attack made him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.

"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
