At least 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
